What the Rhythm Bar Is

The Skater’s Rhythm Bar is a training tool designed to help players feel what real skating rhythm is supposed to feel like. Kids can use it on the ice with their skates or off the ice at home, and in both settings it gives them instant feedback on their stride timing.

Every push creates a clean, consistent response — a sound and a feel — that tells the player whether their stride is smooth, powerful, and correctly timed. Instead of guessing, kids finally understand what a real skating stride should feel like in their legs, hips, and core.

It’s simple, durable, and built from decades of coaching experience.

Why Rhythm Matters in Skating

Most young players don’t struggle because they’re weak — they struggle because their timing is off.

Kids often rush their stride, chop their steps, or move their feet fast without ever connecting push → glide → recover. They never feel the natural tempo that creates real speed.

Without rhythm:

Strides get short and inefficient

Players burn energy without gaining speed

Balance and edge control suffer

They can’t transfer power through the ice

They look busy, but not effective

Rhythm is the hidden foundation of skating. When kids learn it early, everything else improves — power, balance, confidence, and game performance.

Fix the Timing Problems That Slow Players Down

How the Rhythm Bar Helps

The Rhythm Bar gives players something they rarely get in skating: instant, automatic feedback that teaches them without overthinking.

Kids learn best when they can feel what’s right. The bar does exactly that:

  • The Sound

Each push creates a clear, repeatable sound that reveals whether the stride is rushed or smooth.

  • The Timing

Players naturally settle into a steady, efficient stride tempo

  • The Rhythm

They learn the cadence of real skating — not fast feet, but powerful, controlled pushes.

  • The Feel

The bar teaches the sensation of a strong stride: hips driving, legs extending, body staying balanced.

  • The Feedback

If timing is off, the bar tells them immediately. No coach needed in that moment.

This works on the ice and off the ice, making it one of the most versatile stride‑timing tools available.

Head Coach, Chicago Blues Bantam Central States

As a former NEHI instructor, I know how passionate Coach Chic is about the game of hockey and the development of today’s young athletes. Several years later, I continue to use his skill development drills whether I am coaching my bantam team, running clinics, or working one‑on‑one with a mite player. Coaches need to realize that unless a player has a firm grasp of the fundamentals of the game (puck control, passing and skating), they will never be successful practicing more difficult drills (breakouts, transitions, and the power play).

To excel at any sport, you must master the fundamentals. It’s no different on ice. To be a great hockey player, you must not only learn how to skate and handle the puck, but you must be confident handling the puck while skating. Coach Chic finds a way to instill this in everyone he teaches. If you take the time to follow his words of wisdom (and he has plenty to teach), you will be well on your way to mastering the best game on the planet.

Roller Hockey Player

I'm a 66 year old who plays roller hockey. Until I was 45, I was a street hockey player, who never skated in his life. I wanted to learn how to rollerblade so I could play some form of hockey when I got older.

So when I was 45, I started rollerblading from square one on my own and then with an instructor, who introduced me to the Skater's Rhythm Bar (or "Z" Bar) to help me understand and coordinate the skater's motion.

By using the bar, I learned that the arms should be moved in rhythm with and in the same line as the legs, to increase the forward momentum of skating. Once I got the idea of using the bar to coordinate my arms and legs, it made skating easy and automatic. I still use it when practicing on my own for good reps to reinforce an efficient skating motion.
