3 Defensive Skill Drills
This post is an example of what can be gained from one of our Exclusive Hockey Apps. To be honest, these are drills I haven’t even considered before, yet ones that I’d surely use today.

Anticipation Interception Drill
This drill helps players improve their ability to intercept passes and understand passing lanes. Set up a small area with four players and choose one to act as the defender. The other three pass the puck around while the defender works to predict and intercept the passes. Players are encouraged to use smart body positioning to block lanes and create turnovers. This kind of activity strengthens pattern recognition and anticipatory skills, both of which are vital for solid defensive play in real game situations.
Stick Length Coverage Drill
This drill focuses on teaching players how to effectively use their stick length for poke checks and spatial control. Scatter several pucks across a designated area, then have a single player act as the defender. Without moving his or her feet, the player uses their stick to poke away as many pucks as possible. This exercise helps players become more aware of their reach and how to manage space using their stick. It also boosts proprioception, giving the athlete a stronger sense of body positioning and control on the ice. (Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense its own position and movement. It allows you to know where your limbs are without looking at them and helps you maintain balance and coordination.)
Pressure Zone Escape Drill
This drill is designed to improve a player’s ability to escape tight situations with smart decisions and effective puck handling. Create a small area using cones and place one defender inside with a puck. Other players then take turns entering the space to apply pressure. The defender’s task is to find creative ways to exit the zone, using dekes, spins, and protective moves. The drill sharpens executive function skills by helping players practice quick thinking, problem-solving, and puck control under intense pressure.
