Using Video to Improve Your Game
In this episode, we take a fresh look at one of the most powerful — and most underused — tools in player development: video. Long before video became common in youth hockey, I discovered how slowing plays down, freezing frames, and studying movement could reveal things the naked eye simply can’t catch in real time.

You’ll hear the story of a young skater with a stubborn stride problem that I couldn’t diagnose on the ice. Once I filmed her and studied the footage repeatedly, the real issue jumped out — and that discovery eventually led to a training gadget that helped hundreds of players.
We’ll also dig into how video transformed the way I evaluated team play. After reviewing a tough loss with no assumptions, I logged nearly 300 passing and receiving errors — and uncovered a deeper pattern in our reaction time after turnovers. That insight eventually grew into the MP Drill Format I later presented at the NHL Coaching Symposium.
If you’ve ever wondered how to see the game more clearly, or how to uncover the hidden details that shape a player’s development, this short lesson will give you a new way to study the sport…
